Most Recent Google Bomb

Ah, the Google Bomb, created in 1999 and rearing its ugly head every so often. The very first Google Bomb was created to voice serious displeasure with Microsoft. The search term “more evil than Satan himself” did in fact return the Microsoft home page as the first result on Google. Next, in 2000, came the incredibly tasteless (but slightly funny) “dumb motherf#@$ers” search term, which yielded a George W. Bush website.

There are a surprising number of Google Bombs (aka googlewashing or spamdexing) over the past 13 years. Oftentimes they can be funny, which is typically the goal, as humor sites are the usual suspects for kicking these things off. Even though they can be funny however, these tactics are also most often used to attack and defame prominent companies, celebrities and political figures.

The most recent Google Bomb, currently in full-swing, is against now-former ESPN sportscaster Craig James. Eventually it will come out who started this particular gem, but sites like the sports humor and news forum Every Day Should Be Saturday have done a rather effective job fueling the effort.

For me, it’s fascinating to watch how something like the current “Craig James killed five hookers” farce can take shape. This particular allegation is completely false by the way, in case you were confused. It was started by a site like Every Day Should Be Saturday and began spreading throughout message boards at a viral pace early December. Then, when Craig James announced his run for Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s seat in the US Senate, the dead hooker meme escalated to Google Bomb status.

Historically, effective political googlewashing targets the conservative party, which then leads to questions of demographics. What is the typical age of a Google Bomb participant? Can we assume they have a liberal stance or are they simply participating in a current trend, not thinking about the political implications their actions entail?

Of course, the Craig James meme was not originally fueled by politics but past circumstances with Mike Leach, SMU and ESPN. Now that he is running for the Senate however, it will be interesting to see how his history in the sports world and his current political run will intertwine. So far the response in social media realms has been largely negative for Craig, but who knows what will happen next week? That is the beauty of social media. Any situation can be turned around if handled correctly.

*Please note that I am not interested in participating in the Craig James meme, nor will I allow my blog or site to be used for black hat tactics of any kind. I reserve the sole right to approve or disapprove any comments. This space is meant to talk about social media as a practice, and that is all. Thanks!

I wouldn’t say this is the most recent google bomb, this has been around for a few years. I’m sure there’s one much more recent than this.

I understand that this was started awhile ago; however, it did start picking up some serious steam in December because of his announcement to run for the US Senate. I would love a more recent example though. Have you found one?

Black hat tactics? Hardly. The college football commentariat has decided to mock this guy because he’s a no-talent ass clown and helicopter parent. Most of the folks who participate in this would LOVE to see James win the GOP primary — just to make sure he’s still off ESPN for the 2012 football season. Then again, most of us don’t live in Texas.

And, besides, he’s never denied it, has he?

Sigh, again. I don’t care about football. That’s not what this article is about. It’s also not about Craig James. Spamming a phrase like “CJ killed…” on people’s blogs and message boards that don’t want it IS A BLACK HAT TACTIC. And it’s incredibly disappointing that you are more concerned about ESPN than the future of this nation.

Fact: Craig James hired a PR firm to control the spin on the Mike Leach story.
Fact: Craig James is unpopular (to put it mildly) with intelligent college football fans.
Fact: Craig James killed five hookers while at SMU is a piece of good-natured internet fun.
Theory: Craig James’ PR firm is concerned the electorate may not be able to tell the difference between the hooker falsehood and the other falsehoods the GOP are feeding the electorate this year.
Theory: Craig James (and his PR firm) is controlling the message on this website, including the comment section of this post.

Fact: This is MY blog, and this was an interesting topic.
Fact: I couldn’t care less about Craig James or Mike Leach.
Fact: I’m pretty sure that this blog article covers the usual intent of a Google Bomb, and that the Craig James thing is an internet gag. So, why are you restating the obvious?
Fact: I don’t work for Craig James.
Theory: You are annoying, like so many other insanely fanatical football fans.

you could or could not care less?

by the way. I hear that Craig James… Is it true that Craig James …? Or is it just an urban legend that Craig James …?

Thanks for pointing out the typo George, I fixed it. I edited your comment because I said from the beginning that I wouldn’t tolerate that phrase in my comments section. :)

Turned the comments off for a little while because of the sheer number of CJ killed 5 hooker comments. Sorry for the inconvenience to everyone else who wished to comment here legitimately. And no, this blog has nothing to do with Craig James or his campaign to answer those folks who were asking.

That only makes it more interesting that it resurfaced back in December, where it began to mess with Google’s auto-correct feature because of the new flurry of activity around it.

Google bombs are a good way to become more media literate and take control of the search engines we now rely heavily on. In any case, check this link out. Sylvia Brown

Lol, Admin is so clearly related to Craig James this is sad. Why don’t you get a day job instead of defending this asshole? If you really aren’t concerned about his welfare then you wouldn’t be so adamant about defending the prick that is Craig James.
